Our Troop
Boy Scout Troop 50 is an active and visible part of the local community. The Troop was founded on March 31, 1938. We are proud to be chartered by the Trinity Episcopal Church located at located at 5375 US-231, Wetumpka, AL.
Troop 50 Scouts live according to the ideals of scouting as spelled out in the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, Outdoor Code and Slogan.
Our Troop has 45 youth members and is very active. We camp one weekend each month during the school year and attend a weeklong camp during the summer. Our Scouts enjoy outdoor activities like camping and hiking. In addition to camaraderie and leadership, the boys learn and practice outdoor skills like camping, cooking, and orienteering on these trips.
Boy Scouting
Boy Scouts of America (BSA), incorporated on February 8, 1910 and chartered by Congress in 1916, provides an educational program for boys and young adults to build character, to learn the responsibilities of participating in citizenship, and to develop personal fitness.
Boy Scouting is a year-round program for boys age 11 - 17. Boys who are 10 may join if they have received the Arrow of Light Award or have finished the fifth grade. Boy Scouting is a program of fun outdoor activities, peer group leadership opportunities, and a personal exploration of career, hobby and special interests, all designed to achieve the BSA's objectives.
Scout Advancement
The Boy Scout advancement program places a series of challenges in front of a Scout in a manner that is fun and educational. As Scouts meet these challenges, they achieve the aims of Boy Scouting. The Scout advances and grows in the Boy Scout phase of the program in the same way a plant grows by receiving nourishment in the right environment.
Our patrol leaders and older Scouts, under the supervision of the Scoutmasters, work with younger Scouts on rank advancement during the year. Additional opportunities are available in summer camp programs. Boys are encouraged to earn merit badges individually or in groups/patrols. Troop 50 holds quarterly Courts of Honor, where advancement is formally acknowledged.
Meetings
Our troop meetings are held every Monday night, 6:30 to 8:00 pm Aug –Sep. We meet at Trinity Episcopal Church (5375 US Hwy 231) in Wetumpka. We do not have weekly meetings in the month of July.
Leadership
The Troop is "Boy-led", this means the Scouts lead the troop meetings, campouts, outings, and events. The boys learn leadership by selecting the troop activities, organizing and planning the events, and then leading the events. The Scoutmasters, Troop Committee members, and adult leaders provide supervision and guidance.
Our youth leaders plan varied activities and destinations each year. In addition to camping, other activities include:
- canoe/kayak expeditions
- hikes
- zip-lines
- rock climbing
- snow skiing/tubing
- tent-less overnighters
- deep sea fishing
Parent Participation
Troop 50 enjoys a strong parental base. In addition to adult leadership and Troop Committee positions, we have many parents who help with special projects. Our Troop Committee meets monthly to discuss troop issues and to ensure the troop’s safety and success.
